SOCIO-ECONOMIC FACTORS AND THE LEVEL OF PARTICIPATION IN BARANGAY AFFAIRS OF SIKATUNA RESIDENTS IN QUEZON CITY, PHILIPPINES

Abstract

Participation in community affairs is an important tool of community or barangay development. This has been given great importance particularly in Philippine barangay governance. In the words of Aquilino Pimentel, barangay governance serves as the sounding board, upward and downward for the articulation of problems, needs and sentiments of the people, as well as the mechanisms that the government directly interacts with the people. This paper therefore, attempts to establish the relationship between the socio-economic factors and the level of participation in barangay affairs of Sikatuna residents in Quezon City, Philippines. Aside from the relationship between the socio-economic factors and the level of participation, the paper also attempted to determine the problems of the residents in participating in community affairs through a qualitative survey. It also determines possible ways of improving people’s participation based on the opinions of the residents’ themselves.
